Obituary

Susan Kathleen Mackey was born on August 29, 1954 to Bernice and John Mackey in Chehalis Washington.  The middle of five children, Susan was active in swimming, track, choir, and student council—graduating from WF West High School.  She worked a variety of odd jobs until graduating from Bates and running her own wallpaper business.  After 10 years, Susan sold her business and began a career working for Bethel schools as a campus safety officer.  She enjoyed keeping kids safe, providing stability, and working with kids to resolve conflicts instead of fighting.

A free spirit, Susan enjoyed trips traveling by train across the country, visiting Vegas/California/Hawaii, cruising the Caribbean and Greece, and time in Italy and Mexico. She loved music and theater and frequented concerts, musicals, and plays.  She was an avid gardener and enjoyed raising her own crops, canning, and baking.

Susan's greatest achievement in life was motherhood.  She was determined to be a better parent than her own and dedicated her time to coaching, volunteering, and carpooling for her daughter, Amanda.  They lived with and cared for Susan's mother and grandmother until their deaths.  This small family of four generations was precious to Susan and a great source of pride.

Susan lived a full life and was always willing to listen and pitch in to help.  She was a good friend, a great sister and aunt, and a wonderful mother.  She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents Irma Bernice and John Mackey, grandparents Clara and Elof Johnson, aunt and uncle Mary and Ron Johnson, Roy Jellison, Glady and Emery Erickson, Marcia Erickson, and Jan Erickson.  She is survived by daughter Amanda Mackey; brothers/sisters: Mike and Kristy Mackey, Patricia Champlin, Julie and Patrick East, and Diana Mackey; nieces/nephew:  Annie and Rob Niswonger, Jesse Mackey, Lisa Champlin, Amy and Ryan Ulrich, Sandra and Justin Beardsley, Pat and Jennifer Flanagan, Jenny and Brandon East-Wedam, Laura and Trevor East-Pease; great nieces/nephews: Lily Niswonger, Eric Niswonger, Jessalynn Mackey, Jianna Mackey, Luca Beardsley, Jabriel Mackey, Eleanor East-Pease, and Jack East-Wedam.  As well as special friends the Jellison's, the Erickson's, and the Elshire's.
