Rudy Horst, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, servant of God, and faithful servant to his country, passed away peacefully at his home in Lakewood, Washington, on August 23, 2026. Born in Helena, Montana, on November 1, 1939, Rudy lived a life marked by faith, service, learning, creativity, and an enduring devotion to his family. Rudy enlisted in the United States Navy as a teenager shortly after graduating from high school. His commitment to service continued throughout his life. While attending the University of Idaho, he earned a degree in electrical engineering and met the love of his life, Phyllis, whom he married. Together, they built a marriage that would span 65 years. Rudy later earned his master’s degree and continued his military career, ultimately retiring from the Navy after 23 years of service with the rank of Commander (O-5). Among his many military accomplishments, Rudy was especially honored to receive the Legion of Merit, one of the highest military awards given for exceptionally meritorious conduct and service in the absence of combat heroism. Following his military retirement, Rudy began a second career as an engineer with Boeing, continuing his lifelong passion for learning, problem-solving, and service. Rudy’s greatest devotion, however, was to his family and his faith. He was a loving and devoted husband to Phyllis and a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His faith was reflected not only in his words but also in the way he lived, continually looking for opportunities to serve and encourage others. His desire to help others extended well beyond his professional life. Rudolph volunteered with chaplains at Madigan Army Medical Center, taught at Pierce College, shared his knowledge with the senior center and a homeschool cooperative, and was an active leader and contributor to Crohn’s and Colitis support groups. He freely gave his time, knowledge, and compassion to those around him. Rudy was also a man of many talents and interests. He was a skilled carver, painter, and calligrapher and enjoyed programming and other creative and intellectual pursuits. His curiosity and willingness to learn were lifelong characteristics that he shared generously with others. Rudy is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Phyllis; his brothers, Robert and Gary; his children, Randall, Perry, and Janelle; his grandchildren, Tallis, Carly, Gray, Deborah, Thomas, Lydia, and Caleb; and his great-grandchildren, Alexander, AJ, and Kenji. Rudy leaves behind a legacy of faithful service, quiet generosity, intellectual curiosity, creativity, and, above all, love for God and his family. The impact of his life will continue through the many people he taught, encouraged, served, and loved.
