Richard Allen
"Hamburger" Myers
Sep 13, 1931 — Oct 15, 2024
Celebrating the life of
Richard Allen "Hamburger" Myers
September 13, 1931 – October 15, 2024
Rick was born in Los Angeles, to Clara and Al Myers. He graduated from Tacoma's Lincoln High School in 1949, earned his Bachelors in Education from UPS, and his Masters from PLU.
He worked for Clover Park School District for 32 years, as a teacher then elementary counselor. Rick brought to the District a deeper understanding of how child development impacts a successful school experience, observing that emotional maturity played a huge role in achieving academic potential. He rejected labeling children as failures and challenged punitive practices. Working with the Gesell Institute of Child Development, Rick brought research-based staff development to teachers and administrators leading to changes in the way student progress was evaluated and reported. This research has stood the test of time. Rick made a difference in the lives of many.
Starting as a child Rick worked for his father at Hamburger Myers, an institution at the Puyallup Fair famous for their onion burgers and singing cooks. Rick and his wife took over the business in 1970, and retired in 2017, employing many who became lifelong friends.
Rick is survived by his wife, Joan. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Joanne.
Rick will be remembered for his sense of humor and strong political views, which he rarely hesitated to discuss. Donations in Rick's memory can be made to the Washington State Fair Foundation Blue Ribbon Scholarship Fund:

At his request, no public memorial will be held.
