Gig Harbor
Peggy Joan Fillo
Peggy peacefully passed away at the age of 78 on July 6, 2024.
Peggy was born in Vermillion, SD on November 18,1945. In 1946, she moved to Centralia, WA with her family, where she attended school. Growing up, she enjoyed spending time on her grandparent's farm on Seminary Hill, and spoke fondly of her childhood memories while living on N. Washington St. with her sister, Sharee. She graduated from Centralia High School in 1964. She then attended Centralia Community College where she studied secretarial skills.
She married her high school sweetheart, Ron, in 1966. They had two daughters together, Corrine and Roni. After living a short time in Centralia, she and Ron moved to Fircrest, WA where they had their daughter, Roni. Soon after, they moved to Tacoma, WA where they bought their first home. Peggy lived in the same home until shortly before her death, which was her "happy place." She especially loved the two beautiful oak trees situated outside her front window. In her younger days, she enjoyed mowing her lawn and doing yardwork, which she took great pride in maintaining.
Peggy started her long career in public service while working for the State at the Capitol Building in Olympia, WA, where she worked for six years. She was then hired by the City of Tacoma as a secretary at the County City Building. She spent most of her career at the Tacoma Fire Department and at Power Management where she worked as a payroll specialist/administrative assistant. She retired in 2014 after 36 years of service with the City of Tacoma.
Peggy loved animals, and they were an important and special part of her life. After losing her precious corgi, Cooper, she adopted a rescue cat named Lilly who brought much joy to her in her final years. Peggy had a generous, kind, caring spirit, especially when it came to animals. She frequently donated to the Tacoma Humane Society, and regularly participated in and raised donations for their annual "Dog-a-Thon" with her two dogs, Cooper and Libby.
Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Ardis ("Toni") Alexander. She is survived by her two daughters, Roni Fillo (Kevin) and Corinne Simons; sister, Sharee Johnson (Charlie); brother, Richard Alexander (Shelly); nieces Makenzie Alexander and Dawn Dietrich (Richard), nephews Matthew Alexander (Maureen) and Jim Johnson; granddaughters Jennifer Rodriquez (Bill), Kimberly Barker (Jeffery), and Crystal Sawyer (Michael); and six great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life is planned for Friday, August 9th at 12:30pm at the Chambers Creek Chapel at New Tacoma Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tacoma Humane Society in Peggy's name. Be sure to select "this gift is in honor, memory, or support of someone" and provide her details: https://www.thehumanesociety.org/donate/?tab=one-time-gift
