Margaret Wilhelmina Smelt passed away November 18th, 2023 at the age of 88.  Margaret was born to Hendrik Jan and Marie Wilhelmina Sophie Bergraat in 1935 in The Hague, Netherlands.  After completing High School, she worked as a clerk at banks and insurance firms in Amsterdam.  She married Paul William Smelt on February 26, 1955 in Amsterdam, and almost immediately emigrated to Boulder City, Nevada.  Since 1962, their home was in Eugene, Oregon.  Paul passed away in 2020, shortly after they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.  In April 2023, Margaret relocated to assisted living in Tacoma, Washington to be closer to her son.

Margaret will be remembered for her love for home and family.  She also loved camping and the out-of-doors and was an accomplished artist, with special interest in painting, sculpture, and fiber arts. She was a past member of the Willamette Valley Fiber Arts Guild and the Eugene Songspinners.  Margaret was pre-deceased by her husband Paul, and her daughter Glenna (McLaughlin) Anderson of Cove, Oregon.  She is survived by her son Harold Smelt (Holly) of Tacoma, Washington, six grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Margaret's name to Habit for Humanity, an organization she supported for many years.
