Leon G. Wittner Jr was born in Denver, Colorado on October 25, 1939 to Leon G. Wittner Sr. and his wife Vivian. He was the oldest of four children born to the couple and spent his entire childhood living in the city of Denver. He attended West High School in Denver until the age of 17, at which time he enlisted in the US Navy. Leon served on the USS O'Bannon as a machinist. During his time in the Navy, he served overseas, traveling to places like Japan and Australia. He returned home to Denver after completion of his duty in the Navy, where he met his wife Carol at a hometown football game between his high school and hers, West High School versus North High School. Leon and Carol married on July 16, 1961. They spent the next 62 years together building a life and raising children. This coming July 16th would have marked their 63rd wedding anniversary. After marrying and starting a family, Leon worked at the Denver Mint and attended night classes at Denver Metropolitan College. He worked, cared for his family and earned his bachelors of science in mechanical engineering during the early years as a husband and father. He graduated from college after those years of hard work and studies and went on to work as an engineer for many firms over the course of his career. He was most proud of his time with the Army Corp of Engineers, where he spent the majority of his career and eventually retired from work having been a dedicated civil servant. Leon was a 55 year member of the Fraternal Order of Freemasons, having joined Lodge 14 in Boulder in 1968.

In his spare time, Leon enjoyed outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting, boating, and camping. He loved spending time with his wife every summer in their home in Canyon Creek, Montana. He especially loved the time he spent with his neighbors and members of the community there.

Leon had a very special bond with his family, but most especially with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Leon was preceded in death by his parents, Leon Sr. and Vivian, and his brother Michael. He is survived by his wife Carol, his two sisters Sharon and Sandy, along with his many children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will take place at New Tacoma Funeral Home and Cemetery in the Evergreen Chapel on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 at 11:00 am. A light reception will follow to be able to spend time reflecting on Leon's life with others who will be present. Leon's wish was to be laid to rest in his home state of Colorado. Burial services will take place at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado at 9:15 am on Tuesday, June 27, 2023.
