Obituary

Kathleen Mayme Pettygrove Kirby Reid, affectionately known as Kathy, passed away on June 16, 2024, in Port Orchard, Washington, at the age of 79. She was born November 23, 1944, on Thanksgiving Day, in Ketchikan, Alaska. Kathy's life was marked by her cheerful and positive spirit, a quality that endeared her to many throughout her life.

Kathy's educational journey began at Ketchikan Elementary and led to her graduation from Ketchikan High School in 1963. She then attended Northwestern School of Business. Kathy enjoyed many different jobs throughout her life. She started as a flight assistant on seaplanes in Ketchikan. She worked as a clerk and typist for the Alaska State Patrol, where she also had duties of dispatch and drivers licensing. At the Edmonds Police Department, Kathy was employed as a clerk and stenographer. At this time, she also began volunteering for the American Red Cross in the Gray Ladies. Kathy then attended Hillcrest College of Health Careers, where she received a Vocational Nurse diploma. She enjoyed providing in-home care and worked at Harrison Hospital. Kathy concluded her working career with 29 years of service at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. At PSNS, Kathy worked in the supply center and document control department.

Kathy's life was filled with love and laughter that she shared with her family. She enjoyed volunteering in her community and later in her children's schools. Kathy's faith was an important aspect of her life. This is reflected in her involvement in the LDS Church as a young lady and ending in The Salvation Army Church. Her hobbies included bowling, dancing, singing, and volunteering. She loved cheering on her grandchildren in their endeavors and had unending stamina when playing with them. She was never too tired or too busy to indulge her grandbabies. Kathy and her husband, Nelson, were active in The Salvation Army Church where they made many friends. Kathy's church friends became like family to her. Spending time in fellowship was important to her and she got much in return. Kathy's life was a testament to her loving nature and her ability to connect with others. She will be deeply missed by those who were blessed to have known her.

Kathy is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Nick and Beth Pettygrove; her sister and brother-in-law, Alyce and David Meyering, and their sons Danny, Casey and Paul; her daughter, Rina Kirby Impey, and granddaughters Madison and Abigail; her son and daughter-in-law, David and Erin Kirby, and grandchildren Jorden, Tayler, Trevor and Landon; and her niece and nephew-in-law, Marty Pettygrove Luckow and Travis Luckow, and grand-nephews Nevin Pettygrove and Nolan Luckow.
