John Johnson
Martin
Jun 10, 1924 — Jul 3, 2023
Tacoma
John passed away after 99 full years. He lived his last retired 28 years with Ann Bartells (Gindroz). Together they enjoyed sailing on Ariel, fishing, walking, Dragon Boating around the world (John as senior steersman), working and relaxing in a historic home before moving to a beautiful retirement community.
Born in Windsor, Ontario, he moved to Michigan with parents and 3 older sisters (all deceased). Following family tradition, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a US citizen during WWII. During his time, he flew transport squadrons to and from stations including Europe and Africa. After the war, he was an RCAF trainer across Canada all the way to Comox, Vancouver Island, where he met his first wife Chris (deceased). Together they had Sharon (deceased), Joe, and Pam. He was active with family, hiking with scouts, sailing, traveling, relating to creatures (especially dog and cat pets), and proud of his Scottish heritage, often wearing his Cameron kilt for special occasions.
John held a variety of qualifications and jobs before his final service at the Washington State Reformatory in Monroe. Sergeant "Little John" retired after 30 years, divorced, lived a single life, then married Ann and moved to Tacoma.
He is survived by wife Ann, her children Michael Gindroz (Laura), Susan Blake, step grandchildren Zach Blake, Sidney and Claire Gindroz, son Joe (Nita), daughter Pam, granddaughter C.J., and many nieces and nephews in Michigan and Canada.
At times John could be funny, adventurous, loving, caring, generous, aggravating, impatient and stubborn. He lived a full life and passed peacefully knowing he was loved by many.
Arrangements and cremation handled by New Tacoma Cemetery. A memorial/celebration of life is still in the plans.
