Obituary

On Friday May 20, 2022, John Phillip Harrison, loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend passed away at age 67 at Oakbrook Country Club in Tacoma, WA.

John was born in 1955 (Hampton, IA) to Dwight A. Harrison and Delores A. (Guldberg) Harrison. The family moved to Colorado Springs where John wrestled for Air Academy High School. John married Barbara Holub in Colorado Springs in 1978. They raised their son, Allen, in Cuchara, Colorado where John and his family founded Panadero Ski Area in 1981. John later met Elena Carlson in La Veta, CO – they married in 1990.

In 1986, John pivoted from the ski industry, along with his father, to develop a championship-level golf course in the Cuchara Valley. Together they helped build a Tom Weiskopf & Jay Morrish designed 18-hole course in La Veta, Colorado. Under John's stewardship as Golf Course Superintendent, Grandote Golf & Country Club was perennially ranked in Colorado's top 10 culminating in 1995 when it was ranked Colorado's #1 Public Golf Course by Golf Digest .

John and Elena resettled in Tacoma, WA in 1999 where they lived their remaining years beloved by dozens of friends.

John had a passion for reading – minimum two novels per week for as long as we can remember. He loved golfing, skiing, the Denver Broncos, and classic rock – all of which, early on, he imparted to Allen. As a father, husband, and friend, he was kind, compassionate, and loyal. He was known for his dry sense of humor, tireless work ethic, and his pragmatic, grounded approach to contentment.

John was preceded in death by his wife Elena, mother Delores, father Dwight, and brothers Tom and Charles. He is survived by his son Allen (Jacque) and grandchildren Ellie and Sam of Denver, CO; brother Paul (Kim) of Castle Rock, CO; sisters Teri of Loveland, CO and Pam of Fremont, NE; sister-in-law Leticia of Avon, CO.

Services pending – will be late summer 2022 in La Veta/Cuchara.
