James Alfred Howard Sr., age 87, of DuPont, Washington, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2026. A proud veteran of the Vietnam War, James dedicated much of his life to service, family, and country.

James was born on May 22, 1938, in Moab, Utah, to Dora and James Howard. At the age of 18, he enlisted in the United States military. After a brief period of service in the U.S. Marine Corps, he went on to complete a distinguished 21-year career in the U.S. Navy. During his military service, James was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, where he met his wife, Miyoko. They were married on September 16, 1963, and raised three children together.

James had a deep appreciation for the outdoors. In his earlier years, he enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, and razor clam digging. He was an avid sports fan and especially treasured time spent connecting with family and friends.

James is survived by his beloved wife, Miyoko; his son, James Howard Jr. (Veronica); his daughter, Susan (John); his grandson, Cole; his brother, John; and his sisters, Marie, Wanda, Lynda, Sue, and Sandra. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members whom he dearly loved.

He was preceded in death by his son, William; his son-in-law, Julian; and his sister, Emily.

Services will be held on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
Visitation will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by a closing service from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. A graveside service with military honors will follow from 1:30 to 2:00 p.m. A reception will be held immediately following the graveside service.
