Homer Leo Oberst

Homer was born in Nampa, ID on July 1, 1930 to Clarence and Pearl Oberst. He attended St. Pauls Catholic School through 8th grade and graduated from Nampa High School. He voluntarily enlisted in the Navy during the Korean was in hope of having some say in where he served. He served from 1950 to 1954 as an Aircraft Engine Mechanic on an aircraft carrier. After his Navy service he attended the University of Idaho where he met Janice (Avery) Oberst the the university Newman Club, where she laughed when she first heard his name. Home and Jan married on June 7, 1958 the day before Homer's graduation with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture degree. He went on to work for Albers Milling Company, the Animal Feed Division of Carnation. He worked for Albers for over 30 years and much of that time as regional manager for the Pacific Northwest. They settled in Tacoma in the early 1960's.

Homer was a born leader and was involved in leadership in most of the organizations he belonged to. He was the president of his dorm in college, he enjoyed being an active member of the Elks serving in several roles with the local, state and national lodges including Exalted Ruler of the Lakewood, WA Elks Lodge, and President of the Washington State Elks Associaltion. He was a leader in the Washington State Feed association and also served as president of his Home Owner's Association in Steilacoom, WA. After retirement, Homer and Jan traveled with friends to many places in the US. They also enjoyed traveling in their motorhome. After spending several winters in Arizona, they moved to Mesa, AZ full time. They were very active in their village of Sunland Springs and enjoyed couples golf and serving on the dance committee.

Homer and Jan returned to Tacoma at the end of 2022 to be closer to family. Some of Homer's fondest memories are camping at Lake Chelan with family and friends, snow skiing, water skiing and golfing. He was a devout Catholic, a loving husband, father, brother, uncle and friend. He could always be counted on for help, support and advice. Homer will be forever missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife Janice, daughter Cindy Oberst (Mark Minner), son Doug (Heidi) and grandson Seth Oberst.
