Obituary

Eugene (Gene) G. Amar, 93, of Olympia, Washington passed away on Tuesday, June 13, 2023.  It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to a beloved husband, Dad and Papa.  We hold the utmost gratitude and respect for him, and he will be greatly missed by his family.  Gene spent his last days surrounded by his wife and children and will be laid to rest at a private burial at the New Tacoma Funeral Home (University Place, Washington).

Gene was born April 3, 1930, in Minnesota to Ruth Rouse and Abraham Amar.  He graduated from Lincoln High School (Tacoma) and went on to earn a graduate certificate from the American Institute of Banking (University of Wisconsin).  He achieved many certifications from the American Bankers Association and Bank Administration Institute.

Gene was employed with Puget Sound National Bank from 1952 to 1992 and was Senior Vice President and Cashier of Puget Sound Bancorp and its subsidiaries at the time of his retirement.  He was extremely accomplished professionally, well respected and held many leadership positions in local associations and professional groups.

On May 12, 1962, Gene married Joyce Sharkey in Tacoma. Their marriage spanned over 60 years and was an incredible partnership to the end.  Together they raised a blended family with 4 children and cared for dozens of foster children in transition.

Gene was an excellent provider who could always be counted on by the children who came into his life.  He was admired and loved by his children and was a patient man who guided his family through many life experiences.

Gene was an intelligent, courageous self-made man with many interests. He spent many of his retirement years traveling the United States with Joyce, enjoying life on the bay in Fox Island and winters near Palm Springs.  Gene loved sports and spent much of his free time following the Mariners and Seahawks.  As a young man, he loved boxing and bowling.  Over his lifetime, he was an avid golfer and enjoyed hunting and growing his vegetable gardens.  Gene spent time with his children and grandchildren whenever he could.

Gene is survived by his wife Joyce Amar, son Mike Montello (wife Valorie) and  daughters Melodie Olsen and Marcie Amar; six grandchildren,  Ben Swick; Carissa Glassburn; Jeff Olsen; Chris Montello; Shawn Montello (wife Melissa); Chelsea Harris (husband Josh); Dawson Thompson; and 12 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister June Prengel and his son Mark Amar.
