Obituary

The Shumpert Family would like to celebrate the life of Edwin Earl Shumpert, Jr who went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at the age of 55.

Edwin Shumpert Jr was born on Sunday March 31, 1968 in Wilson, AR and passed away with family present February 21, 2024 in Tacoma, WA. Edwin Jr was the son of Edwin E. Shumpert Sr and Dorothy Williams Shumpert and brother to Anthony Shumpert. His childhood experiences took him from Arkansas to Germany for a year as a member of a military family and later to Broken Bow, OK for 7 years, before the family moved to Federal Way, WA in 1981. He was a varsity football player and graduated from Federal Way High School and went on to obtain an AA degree from Green River College, a BA from WSU in Psychology & Aging and a Master's in Transportation and Logistics Management from American Public University. Edwin was a person with a caring heart as big as a house and claimed every person he met as a friend. With no children of his own, he went to great lengths to shower praise and affection on his niece Aspen and nephew Reed. At times when you least expected it, he would recount memories of his childhood like enjoying candy from his grandfather Paul Shumpert's store, or at age 3 grabbing a fish in his small hands caught by his grandmother Helen Williams only to have the fish surprisingly spring to life, or at age 5 when he and his brother climbed thru an unlocked skylight window onto the roof of the 3rd story home where we lived in Germany. He was happiest at Christmas and eagerly took charge of decorating the house for the holidays. His caring nature moved him to help others, particular those he considered needy, and at times even to the determent of his own wellbeing. He donated blood regularly and, on many occasions, took bottles of cold water to tent encampments and provided rides to medical appointments for individuals without transportation. Unfortunately his zeal to help many others and maintain the proper balance in his own life was stressful and eventually took a physical toll on him resulting in a high blood pressure medical condition, that required strict adherence to daily medication, which he often would forget to take. On February 11, 2024 overcome with stress, he collapsed on the street near his car in Tacoma, WA and was taken to St Joseph Hospital where it was determined he had suffered a massive stroke to the brain and sadly, it was too much with no promise of recovery.

Edwin Jr is survived by his parents: Edwin Sr and Dorothy Williams Shumpert of Sherwood, AR; brother and family Anthony Shumpert, wife Shanda and children Aspen and Reed of Tacoma, WA; aunts; Winnie, Joe'anner, Deloise, Sarah; and uncles Nathaniel and Theodore. Shumpert Cousins: Steve, Carol, Thomas Jr, Lance, Vivica, Debra, John Jr, Odell, Greg, Steven, Michael, Kimberly, Calvin Jr, Kyle and Tiffany. Williams Cousins: Donald, Renee, Carolyn, Carl, Terry Jr, Yvette, Tammy, Laeveil, Reginal, Ranielle. Jerrica and a host of extended family members and friends across the country that will miss him more than words can say.

To his life's credit, it can be said that he did all he could for many others to live up to Booker T. Washington's quote: "If you want to lift yourself up, "Lift up someone else". Edwin Jr will remain in our hearts forever.
